Health, Safety and Environmental Specialist (Construction)

Responsibilities

• Manage health and safety requirements for assigned construction sites, including worker orientations, routine inspections, and the collection and maintenance of subcontractor safety documentation.
• Review subcontractors’ pre-construction and ongoing safety submissions to ensure all required documentation is complete, current, and compliant.
• Investigate workplace incidents and accidents, taking the lead when required and ensuring appropriate corrective actions are identified and implemented.
• Conduct regular assessments of site conditions and work practices to identify hazards and ensure risks are promptly addressed.
• Observe and evaluate the activities of employees, trades, and subcontractors to ensure compliance with established safety policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.
• Address safety violations and work with site personnel and subcontractors to resolve issues and improve compliance.
• Develop, coordinate, and deliver required health and safety training, including WHMIS, Working at Heights, PPE, CPR/First Aid, and other applicable programs.
• Prepare and distribute weekly safety audit reports and track outstanding corrective actions through to completion.
• Maintain accurate project safety records and prepare health and safety reports and statistical data on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
• Ensure construction activities are carried out in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and applicable regulations.
• Facilitate Joint Health & Safety Committee meetings, inspections, documentation, and related activities.
• Take a proactive approach to identifying potential safety concerns before work begins and implement measures to eliminate or control risks.
• Promote accountability and provide leadership in maintaining a strong, consistent health and safety culture across the project.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of health and safety experience within the construction industry.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate safety expectations, influence workplace behaviour, and hold employees and subcontractors accountable.
• Practical knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and applicable regulations, combined with hands-on construction site experience.
• National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification, or currently working toward the designation.
• College diploma, certificate, or post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
• Knowledge or experience with the COR certification process is considered an asset.
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work effectively in an active construction environment and manage multiple safety priorities.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Reliability Level Security Clearance.
